Today more than ever the city, large or small, offers countless opportunities for education

- Charter of the International Association of Educating Cities

This article will present readers with a bird’s eye view of some of the European Education Cities’ stories, observing the fine details while concurrently processing the knowledge from the big picture. The focus on Education Cities in Europe out of all the Education Cities in the world makes it possible to understand parallel processes occurring in Europe while simultaneously observing local processes in each city, related to its cultural, historical, economic, and other characteristics.


This article will offer a taste of the Education Cities’ stories from 14 European cities from 9 different countries (see map below).


The article does not intend to tell the complete stories of these Education Cities, but rather a glimpse at the issues they deal with and the educational paths they have chosen to promote their goals. The cities’ stories can be read out of an understanding of the challenges that they face. We therefore focused on 11 different challenges for which we will demonstrate diverse programs and projects of Education Cities coping with these specific challenges.
