For the past 25 years, the director of Lev Ha’ir (downtown) in Jerusalem, Uri Amedi, has been leading an exciting process of change. As a community worker, he began working with the Machane Yehuda Market merchants, creating a process of empowerment that has led to the development of leadership among them, a facelift of the market, and its transformation into a learning space. The article analyzes Amedi’s success story and tries to use it to build a model for bottom-up change in the urban space.
